Comprehensive Eye Examination

A comprehensive eye examination will evaluate not only how well you see, but also identify potential eye diseases. Some eye diseases, such as glaucoma and macular degeneration, can result in serious vision loss if not detected and treated early. Often, patients with these diseases do not experience any visual symptoms before vision loss occurs. The examination will take approximately 1.5 hours depending on which tests need to be performed.

"I have been coming to Dr. Kindy since I was 8 years old! 40 years! I have followed him from office to office. I wouldn't go anywhere else."
Lynley D.

What to expect at your eye exam

Your doctor will most likely dilate the pupils of your eyes to see the optic nerve and retina at the back of your eyes. The dilation takes 15-30 minutes to become effective and it may make your vision a little blurry and sensitive to bright light for a few hours. We recommend you bring sunglasses and a driver, if possible, to take you home. We will provide disposable sunglasses if you need them.

During your eye examination, the following tests may be performed:

  • Visual acuity or refraction test to determine your best corrected visual potential
  • Visual field test to measure your peripheral vision
  • Pupil testing to see how your eyes respond to light
  • Intraocular pressure test to check for glaucoma
  • Dilation of the eyes for a health assessment to look at the health of the cornea, lens, optic nerve and retina
  • If indicated, other specialized tests

At the end of your examination, your doctor will thoroughly review findings of the examination with you and answer all of your questions.

We are now able to offer dilation-free comprehensive eye exams using the Eidon camera. The Eidon uses high resolution images to allow your doctor to check the health of your retina without dilation. Ask your doctor during your exam if you are a candidate.
